AWS Application Discovery allows you to check the applications installed in your environment and report this information to you. This will make it easier for you to migrate your applications to the cloud.
Application Discovery normally uses a small installed agent to perform this function. AWS understands that it may not be practical to use this agent in the case of older or exotic operating systems. Therefore, AWS has released an optional agentless discovery.
If you have virtual machines running through VMware, you may use option to gather data on your applications without having to install an agent on each VM. Instead, you will attach an AWS appliance into your vCenter and it will discover the VMs for you.
Note that the appliance may only gathers system information and resource utilization from each VM. It will store the data for you to review before it sends it to Application Discovery.
However, it cannot collect data on the installed applications therein. For that, you will want to install the AWS Application Discovery agent on an as-needed basis.
