Amazon EMR lets you analyze a vast amount of data using a cluster of virtual servers on the AWS cloud. Every day, this service processes large amounts of data daily, security is a paramount concern.
To enhance this feature, AWS is enhancing Amazon EMR for new kinds of encryption options—for temporary files and data in transit. You may now encrypt at-rest and in-transit data for Apache Spark, Apache Tez, and Hadoop MapReduce.
Specifically, you may now apply encrytion to these types of storage:
- Data stored in S3 through EMRFS.
- Data stored in the local file system of each node.
- Data stored on the cluster using HDFS.
You can find the security configurations at the EMR console. You may also use the CLI or API. Read more about this feature at the documentation. Note that the feature is only applicable for Amazon EMR 4.8.0 or 5.0.0.
