This month, AWS improves old services and introduces brand new ones too.
Amazon Lightsail and Cloud Directory Updates
Amazon Lightsail lets customers easily launch Virtual Private Servers in the AWS cloud. You simply pay $5 monthly and AWS takes care of the rest of the details for you. Amazon Lightsail recently introduced its very own global console. This console lets you create resources across different AWS Regions. You can see all your servers in a single page and manage them all.
In addition, AWS is improving Cloud Directory by providing support for typed links that create object-to-object relationships across hierarchies. You can define different types of links for all existing directories, as well as a set of attributes. Typed links let you keep the integrity of referential data by making sure related objects don’t get deleted by accident.
AWS Greengrass Now Available
If you need to collect and process data out in an area with a slow or unsteady internet connection, AWS Greengrass can be a godsend. AWS Greengrass allows you to program in AWS using even simple devices while out in the field.
AWS Greengrass works using AWS IoT and AWS Lambda and provides access to other AWS services. AWS SDK for Python lets you use Amazon S3, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon SQS and other devices. AWS IoT Device SDK lets you connect to AWS IoT. Finally, the AWS Greengrass Core SDK lets you invoke other Lambda functions, publish messages, and use thing shadows.
Amazon WorkSpaces Managed Device Authentication
Amazon WorkSpaces is AWS’s cloud-based desktop service, letting you work and collaborate from anywhere in the world. This means you can bring your own device (BYOD) such as laptops, tablets, or mobile phones.
Sometimes, however, admins need to manage these devices for compliance or security purposes. Which is why Amazon WorkSpaces will now have device authentication. You may issue digital certificates to manage client access for Windows and OSX, and even grant or deny access for Android, iOS, Chrome OS, web, and zero client devices. You can even create policies that control which devices get access and which get blocked.
Amazon DynamoDB Accelerator (DAX) Now Available
Previously introduced earlier this year, Amazon DynamoDB Accelerator (DAX) is a fully-managed caching service for DynamoDB tables. DAX returns cached messages in mere millisecond, letting you speed up your DynamoDB applications. This makes it very useful for read-intensive workloads.
No need to manage your own patches, clusters, faults, and replications. The service does it all for you. Just create your DAX cluster and set it as the target for read and writes.
Amazon WorkSpaces Introduces Power Bundle
WS doubles down on Amazon WorkSpaces with their new Power Bundle. To answer customer demands for more resources, AWS is giving users the option to have workstation-class machine:
- 4 vCPUs
- 16 Gig of RAM
- 275 Gig of storage (distributed to 175 G for system volume and 100 G for the user)
This is perfect for developers and analysts who require high-end compute services while on the go. Using a mobile device, developers can run applications like Visual Studio, IntelliJ, Eclipse, etc. Meanwhile, analysts may run heavy workloads on MatLab, GNU Octave, R, and Stata.
