AWS had announced the Elastic Network Adapter back in 2016, a service that provides high throughput and low latency while easing the load on its host processor. With features such as intelligent packet routing and multiple transmit and receive queues, ENA can work with multiple vCPUs.
Now, AWS has announced that it is providing even more network bandwidth for AWS EC2. Below are the changes users will see on their connections.
EC2 to S3 – from the original 5 Gbps, traffic can now reach bandwidth speeds of up to 25 Gbps. Useful for applications that make use of enormous amounts of data in S3, particularly for backup and restore.
EC2 to EC2 – up to 5 Gbps for single-flow traffic between AWS EC2 instances to and from any AWS Region.
EC2 to EC2 (Cluster Placement Group) – up to 10 Gbps to and from EC2 Instances within a cluster placement group for single traffic flow, or up to 25 Gbps for multi-traffic flow.
To be able to use this higher bandwidth, you need to use the latest version of ENA-enabled AMIs and current generation AWS EC2 instances. These ENA-enabled AMIs are for Amazon Linux, Ubuntu 14.04 & 16.04, RHEL 7.4, SLES 12, and Windows Server (2008 R2, 2012, 2012 R2, and 2016). Also ENA-enabled are the FreeBSD AMI and the VMWare Cloud for AWS, both on the AWS Marketplace.
