AWS has launched new EC2 instances with faster processors and more memory.
z1d – instances running on 4.0 GHz for compute-intensive tasks and on an all-core Turbo Boost. Best for EDA (Electronic Design Automation), relational database workloads, and HPC workloads.
z1d instances have custom Intel Xeon Scalable Processors and are available in six sizes. They will have 48 vCPUs, 384 Gb of memory, and 1.8TB of local NVMe storage. They are currently available in the US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), US West (N. California), EU (Ireland), Asia Pacific (Tokyo), and Asia Pacific (Singapore) Regions.
Instance Size | vCPUs | Memory | Local Storage | EBS-Optimized Bandwidth | Network Bandwidth |
z1d.large | 2 | 16 GB | 1×75 GB NVMe SSD | Up to 2.333 Gbps | Up to 10 Gbps |
z1d.xlarge | 4 | 32 GB | 1×150 GB NVMe SSD | Up to 2.333 Gbps | Up to 10 Gbps |
z1d.2xlarge | 8 | 64 GB | 1×300 GB NVMe SSD | 2.333 Gbps | Up to 10 Gbps |
z1d.3xlarge | 12 | 96 GB | 1×450 GB NVMe SSD | 3.5 Gbps | Up to 10 Gbps |
z1d.6xlarge | 24 | 192 GB | 1×900 GB NVMe SSD | 7.0 Gbps | 10 Gbps |
z1d.12xlarge | 48 | 384 GB | 2×900 GB NVMe SSD | 14 Gbps | 25 Gbps |
R5 – Memory-optimized EC2 instances running up to 3.1 Ghz powered by sustained all-core Turbo Boost. I has up to 50% more vCPUs and 60% more memory than R4 instances. Great for high-performance databases, distributed in-memory caches, in-memory analytics, and big data analytics.
R5 instances use custom Intel Xeon Platinum 8000series processors and are available in six sizes.
Instance Size | vCPUs | Memory | EBS-Optimized Bandwidth | Network Bandwidth |
r5.large | 2 | 16 Gb | Up to 3.5 Gbps | Up to 10 Gbps |
r5.xlarge | 4 | 32 Gb | Up to 3.5 Gbps | Up to 10 Gbps |
r5.2xlarge | 8 | 64 Gb | Up to 3.5 Gbps | Up to 10 Gbps |
r5.4xlarge | 16 | 128 Gb | 3.5 Gbps | Up to 10 Gbps |
r5.12xlarge | 48 | 384 Gb | 7.0 Gbps | 10 Gbps |
r5.24xlarge | 96 | 768 Gb | 14.0 Gbps | 25 Gbps |
R5d – Memory-optimized EC2 instances with local NVMe storage of up to 3.6 TB. Available in the same sizes and specs as the regular R5, but with local storage ranging from 1 x 75 GB NVMe SSD (large) to 2 x 900 GB NVMe SSD (12xlarge).
Also on the horizon are R5 Bare Metal, R5d Bare Metal, and z1d Bare Metal instances.
