Cancer treatment and research require advanced tech in order to progress. Genomics, which is the study of human DNA, in particular requires a huge amount of computing power to analyze existing data.

I can be difficult to collect, analyze, and store data from different research teams, healthcare institutions, and countries worldwide. As such, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center used cloud computing to create an innovative solution.

The Center developed Oncoscape, an open-source web app that can analyze and visualize a patient’s clinical data. This tool makes it simple for researchers to draw new patterns and relationships in their data, thus helping cancer treatment.

Oncoscape was born from a collaboration between Github and AWS. AWS provided several services, such as Amazon EC2, Elastic Load Balancing, CloudWatch, S3, and Route 53. This simplifies the process of sending data from place to place, monitoring site issues, and making changes to the development environment.

The Oncoscape IT architect Robert McDermott stated that AWS itself proved to be a “very capable, reliable and flexible platform that allows us to quickly adapt to the needs of the project.”
