As a popular online game company, Zynga requires a massive amount of database technology. Despite pre-existing technologies like MySQL and Memcached, it can be a challenge running them over a large scale. To resolve this problem, they turned to Amazon Aurora.
Zynga previously relied on Amazon RDS for MySQL. However, it led to additional latency for traditional databases over the network due to its reliance on Elastic Block Store.
Then they took a risk by experimenting with Amazon Aurora, a MySQL compatible cloud database that outperforms MySQL on SSDs. The bet proved to be a success: Aurora could perform up to their standards without the additional overhead cost of MySQL.
It also provides the same level of automation of RDS. In the past, Zynga needed to manually provision, replicate, and failover to a larger instance or use a code fix to reduce the database load. Aurora, on the other hand, could automatically scale up to a larger instance as needed. Aurora is now Zynga’s go-to for relational databases.
