Amazon SES Can Receive and Process Email

Launched in 2011, the Amazon Simple Email Server service has helped AWS customer send millions upon millions of marketing and transactional emails every year. Now, AWS is providing a new feature to this widely-used service: the ability to receive and process email for either entire domains or single email accounts within a domain. Simply put, this lets you create a system where you can receive, process, and send incoming mails automatically, potentially saving hundreds of man-hours of work.

To use this service, you need to first set up an initial domain of interest. From there, you can create specific rules on what to do with the emails received. Specific actions include:

  • Scan the message for spam or viruses.
  • Deliver the email over secure TLS connection.
  • Add a header.
  • Store the message in an S3 bucket.
  • Publish the message to an SNS topic.
  • Invoke a Lambda function.
  • Return a specified bounce message to the sender.
  • Stop the execution of a rule’s actions.

The feature is available now for $.10 per 1000 emails, with anything over 256kb getting a surcharge of $.09 per 256 kb chunks above the first. Emails that don’t fall under any rules are not charged anything. Thus far, Amazon SES is available in the US East (Northern Virginia), US West (Oregon), and Europe (Ireland) regions.
