As a testament to the security of Amazon RDS (Relational Database), the service has gotten an okay from the U.S. government. Specifically, it has been given a Provisional Authority to Operate (P-ATO) at the FedRAMP High Baseline inside the AWS GovCloud.
High Baseline means that U.S. government agencies may use Amazon RDS to store data which, while unclassified, is still sensitive.
The AWS GovCloud (US), meanwhile, is an isolated created specifically to host such sensitive government data and run similarly sensitive workloads.
FedRAMP, or the Federal Risk and Authorization Program, provides a standard for security authorization in the cloud. Meanwhile, the Joint Authorization Board, composed of several government agencies, is in charge of all authorizations. High Baseline means that U.S. government agencies may use Amazon RDS to store data which, while unclassified, is still sensitive. More information on FedRAMP can be found here.
