Amazon Route 53: New Health Check Enhancements

AWS has just announced three new features to enhance monitoring in Amazon Route 53.

Metric Based Health Checks

Now you can do a DNS failover depending on any metric from CloudWatch. When you create a metric based health check, it sends an unhealthy status when its CloudWatch counterpart returns an alarm. This is highly useful for creating failovers for endpoints that can’t be reached by a typical Route 53 health check, such as VPCs with private addresses only.

DNS Fail Over for Private Hosted Zones

You may now link health checks with resource records sets inside a Private DNS hosted zone so that one can do multiple failovers inside a VPC. Again, this lets users set DNS failovers for endpoints that only have private IP addresses and cant’ be reached by the usual health check.

Configurable Health Check Locations

You may now also choose the AWS region where each of the health checks are done. This is useful for clients who want the health checks conducted only in the same region as their end users.
